The official tour of the Steinberg mine includes visits to several chambers where artworks were stored during the war. The largest and most remote chamber, located almost a mile from the mine entrance, was named Kammergrafen. It was the only chamber with two levels. Stored there were almost 6,000 items including paintings, sculpture, 18th century French furniture, books, rugs and other items stolen by the Nazis.
While the Kammergrafen chamber is no longer accessible, others, such as the one I visited, provide an eerie sense of Nazi looting activities that culminated with hiding the stolen treasures at Alt Aussee and other repositories.
