This photo was taken from the Vasari Corridor, above the Ponte Vecchio, looking west towards the rebuilt Ponte Santa Trinita. In an effort to slow the advance of Allied forces, the Nazis destroyed all of the bridges along the Arno River with the sole exception of the Ponte Vecchio. The demolition charges severely damaged many of the adjacent buildings.
The Ponte Santa Trinita was blown-up on August 3, 1944. This photo was taken from the opposite direction, looking back towards the Ponte Vecchio (seen in the upper right). Note the rubble of destroyed buildings on the left side of the Ponte Vecchio.
