Behind the Scenes
Rescuing Da Vinci
Munich, Germany
Alt Aussie Exterior

The first public building commissioned in Nazi Germany was the House of German Art (Haus der Kunst). Surprisingly, this building survived the destruction of Munich and became General Patton’s headquarters during occupation, and subsequently an officer’s club.

With the exception of billboards and other signs of daily life sixty years later, the House of German Art appears unchanged. This building is now used to showcase temporary exhibitions and also houses the nightclub P1, one of Munich’s famous high-society hot spots. It is located at Prinzregentenstrasse 1 at the southern edge of the Englischer Garten, Munich’s largest park.

Under the coffers of the long colonnade, at the rear of the building, are mosaic tiles in green and orange which clearly reveal the Nazi swastikas in a repeating pattern.

These are the only Nazi swastikas that I could find on the exterior of a building in Munich during my visits.
