Rescuing Da Vinci is the single most extraordinary “untold” story of World War II – Hitler and the Nazi’s looting of art and America and her Allies’ rescue of it. But it also offers another way to learn about art, history, travel, and so much more. Our website has been designed to create an on-line exchange of information to provide you with the unique opportunity to help us write the final chapter of this story.
For example, the book jacket cover photograph show's Leonardo’s Lady with an Ermine being returned to Poland by U.S. Lt. Frank P. Albright, Capt. Everett Parker Lesley, and Polish Monuments officer Major Karol Estreicher. The soldier on the far right of the book cover photo is a unidentified American GI. If you can identify this man, please contact us and provide their names, service branch or whatever other information you may have. We will regularly be updating our website to post information we receive. We will also include it in future reprints of the book. Other ways you can participate are:
• |
Provide us with additional information on people in our photographs. |
• |
Supplement our list of Monuments Men who assisted in the protection, location, and restitution of art during World War II. We want to identify anyone involved in the MFAA, or who had a key role in the protection of major works of art. If we have listed anyone in error or you know someone we have inadvertently excluded, please provide us with a photograph if possible and a brief biography, including the correct name, rank, country of origin and any other information you may have concerning the person. |
• |
Supplement our list of MFAA personnel who played an integral role in helping build the museums and other cultural institutions which we enjoy today. If you know of any other MFAA personnel connected with such institutions, either before or after World War II who we have overlooked or excluded, please let us know their name and association. Additionally, if you have additional information about anyone on the list, we welcome receiving it. |
• |
Provide new information or additional details about stories in Rescuing Da Vinci. There are many stories we haven’t heard. This website is a forum for sharing them with others. |
• |
Share old photographs with us. We are searching for photographs of everyone on the MFAA personnel list. We will post to our website all such photographs as we find and authenticate them. You may also have family photographs from World War II dealing with this subject which we would greatly appreciate seeing. |
